Unlike other games in the Paper Mario series, it’s actually possible to change Mario’s appearance in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. You’ll need to clear a few Chapters to unlock this ability, but when you do, you’ll be able to change the color of Mario’s overalls to green, yellow, or a hidden third color.

Here's our guide on how to change Mario's appearance and costume in The Thousand-Year Door, and where to find each outfit.

How to change Mario's outfit

This is pretty simple — all you need to do is grab the relevant Badges and equip them. They don't cost any BP, either, so you won't be taking up an ability slot.

Where to find the L Emblem

The L Emblem is hidden away in Poshley Sanctum, an area you’ll visit at the end of Chapter 6. More specifically, it’s in the Crystal Star room with all the Dark Boos flying about.

Use your Spring Jump ability to hop up on the poles, and then use those poles to make your way to the left side of the room. Continue using Spring Jump to latch onto the poles and you’ll eventually find the L Emblem in the top-left corner of the room.

Where to find the W Emblem

The W Emblem actually isn’t hidden away in any particular location – instead, there’s a merchant in Rogueport who has a chance to sell it for a high price.

Indeed, the merchant Charlieton appears in central Rogueport after Chapter 1, and he has a chance of carrying the W Emblem as one of his available products at any given time. Every time you leave and return to Rogueport, his inventory will change.

How to get the third color

There’s a hidden third color that requires the use of both the L Emblem and the W Emblem. If you equip both of these items at once, Mario’s clothes will turn purple to reference Waluigi!

This does mean that you technically can’t use the Waluigi costume until the end of Chapter 6, though, because the L Emblem is in an area you won’t be able to access until then.

What does changing Mario's outfit do?

Absolutely nothing — it's purely cosmetic! This is just a fun little hidden extra that lets you change Mario's clothes to match the colours of Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. It’s not too difficult to get a hold of these costume changes, so be sure to pick your favorite.
