Pilotwings titles have always been showpieces for Nintendo's new hardware, and Pilotwings Resort is no exception. It's clear from the moment you begin playing the game that the developers created the game in an effort to show off the fancy 3D visuals and analogue Circle Pad, and given the fact that it's been over 15 years since the last Pilotwings release, you can't disagree: this new entry in the series is long overdue.
From a gameplay standpoint, Pilotwings Resort deviates very little from the trademark formula that's made it popular among Nintendo fans over the years. You'll have your choice of three different aerial vehicles — an airplane, a glider and a Jet Belt — each with their own unique sets of controls. The airplane provides the most versatile experience since its engine will keep it moving without any help from the player, but also comes with a speed boost and the ability to perform some fancy stunt work. The glider controls much like it would in real life, requiring you to keep it moving using your momentum, not to mention a bevy of thermal pockets. And last, but certainly not least, the Jet Belt provides the most challenging controls, requiring you to use its directional jets to control its horizontal and vertical movements. You'll also be able to unlock a few additional vehicles by completing missions, but these crafts share control similarities with the three you start the game with, with only slight nuances to set them apart.

There are two modes of play in Pilotwings Resort, each offering up a very different playing experience. Mission Mode is the meat of the package and gives you five different classes to play through, all containing a wealth of different tasks to take on. These tasks include challenges such as flying your vehicle through hoops, shooting targets and balloons and even shuttling lost UFOs back to their mothership, and with over 40 missions to play, you'll never be at a loss for things to do. Once you've completed a mission, you'll then be graded on your performance and awarded up to three stars. Once you've acquired a certain number of stars, you'll be able to unlock a new and even more difficult mission class. You can even go back to previous missions in an attempt to better your performances and scores.
Free Flight mode is where you'll likely spend the majority of your time once you've completed some of the tasks in Mission Mode. Here you'll be able to fly around the island locating and picking up goodies that you've unlocked in Mission Mode, as well as snapping photos you can view later on in the 3DS Camera feature. It's possible to take some fantastic shots in this mode, and it's a welcome addition to save them to SD card, and although there's a time limit this mode is a great way to just relax and enjoy the game without the added pressure of tackling the game's missions. As you collect various items, you'll unlock the ability to fly in the evening or at night, as well as unique Dioramas that you can go in and view at any time. The game also keeps track of your performance specs, so this provides a nice incentive to go back and try to better your previous mission performances.

The game's controls are simple and intuitive, with good use of the Circle Pad, and no matter which vehicle you choose to pilot around the island there's always plenty of new things to see and do. The biggest part of the game's charm lies not in learning to pilot the game's various aerial crafts, but perfecting your manoeuvring and landing in order to earn better grades on the mission modes. The controls of the vehicles themselves are extremely responsive and mimic many of the same conventions found on their real life counterparts, another aspect of the game that gives it such a realistic feel.
About the only real downside to all of this is that no matter what you choose to do throughout the game, flight always remains the basic principle behind the tasks at hand, something that might become a bit repetitive for gamers looking for a bit more variety. The sharp difficulty spike in later classes might also end up turning some gamers off, especially those who enjoyed the fairly relaxing earlier missions.
Very few 3DS launch titles take advantage of the 3D visuals of the system quite like Pilotwings Resort. Even as gorgeous and lush as Wuhu Island looks on its own accord, it's made even more stunning and realistic with its 3D depth. Of course you can't ignore some of the smaller touches like the lens flare and the different times of day that give the island and its surroundings a completely unique look depending on the time setting. The developers spared no expense when it comes to putting together the game's visual presentation and it shows just how much of an impact the 3D capabilities of the system make from a graphical standpoint.

Nintendo seems to have an obsession with jazz music when it comes to Pilotwings, and here there's another round of interesting music tracks to carry the flight-based gameplay. It's fairly clear that the developers wanted something to liven up the settings of the island, while at the same time blending into the background and not standing out too much. Some tracks are fairly soothing for those times when you're free-flying around the island whereas other tracks are a bit more intense, such as when you're barreling towards the ground in a custom squirrel suit. Even the sound effects tend to be more subdued, but still a nice compliment to the game's unique musical score.
Conclusion
It would be easy to label Pilotwings Resort as just a simple package of eye candy for Nintendo to show off its new piece of hardware on, but those who dismiss it as such will be missing out on an extremely well-rounded and challenging gaming experience. At its core the majority of the game is still just basically flying around the island, but there's enough variety between the various missions to keep things fresh and enough unlockable goodies to keep you coming back for more. It might have been a rather long wait for a new Pilotwings release, but Nintendo couldn't have picked a better system for it.

Nice review Corbie.
Ok, you've convinced me, this is definately a launch day purchase for me! I was on the fence but you've happily confirmed this game's good qualities, whereas some other sites focused on negatives. I'm definately the kind of player who'll get plenty of play-time trying to beat my best scores.
will get this then!
Is there more worlds then Wii Sports Resort Island?
Wuhu Island is it.
I think it fitting they waited until 3DS to update the series. As PilotWings64 showcased "3D from 2D" back on the N64.
I just think its a shame they only included one island in this game where the last entry had 4. This game could have been so much more.
I'm on the fence with this game. I never played Pilotwings, and, the Free Flight mode in WSR, although it was fun, it wasn't fun for long.
Anyways great review Corbs.
I'm a bit glad they stuck with just one island as it's tough enough to locate all of the hidden places to complete some of the missions as it is. I can only imagine what it would be like with multiple islands. LOL
Looks pretty fun!!
5 more days till 3DS.
You know, I wanna buy it but when I last played it the 3D didn't work well...
Shame they didn't add the parachute missions from the original SNES game. Was always a day 1 purchase for me, though. 2 sleeps to go...
Great review, but I'll pass on this one. Not a fan of flying games.
Nice one, Corbs. Now this has helped relieve my doubt - it's a hooked purchase for me once again.
Thanks for the review Corbie, the island flyover minigame in Wii Sports Resort is a big hit in my household... so I'm sure this will be a great purchase for me.
It's always nice to have a chilled-out score attack game on a handheld I think
Great review, Corbs...
Good Review!
Great review Corbie! This is the only game I pre-ordered along with my 3DS, but I think I might pick up Steel Diver as well, just for the heck of it.
I was really looking forward to this one though, and I'm glad to see you enjoyed it so much.
Not going to get this until it drops in price.
I guess there is no online leaderboards, AR minigames or streetpass intergration as they are not mentioned in the review. Shame.
Nice review. I'll be getting this and Nintencows on launch day.
Good review...have this pre-ordered with my 3DS
I know there is no multiplayer but is there a way to see our friends score on the challenges...like a friends leaderboard or something?
@billy-beauts - No there are none of those in the game.
Thanks for the great review Corbie!
I've been reading for a long time now, but don't usually comment. I have a couple of questions for you though. First, did you find Pilotwings Resort to be fairly short like a lot of reviewers are saying? Second, are you reviewing any more 3DS games before the launch? I was hoping you might review Steel Diver because I was thinking of getting it, but value what you say a lot.
Thanks for all the great information, I look forward to reading more soon!
I found Pilotwings Resort to have plenty of content. When you figure in the 40+ missions, the Free Flight goodies, and the brutal level of challenge in the later mission classes, most gamers should find more than enough hours of fun in this package.
I'll be reviewing Rayman 3D next and I'll likely have it ready to go up on Thursday night. And due to a shortage of copies, we were unable to land a review copy of Steel Diver, but I'll be picking it up on Saturday night and I'll have a review of it done a day or two later.
And thanks for the kind words. They're much appreciated.
Wierd. It almost feels like Monster Games missed a memo from Nintendo or something. I know they are good devs, but I can't help wishing that this game had been made in Japan, under the watchful eye of Shigs.
I love you Corbie And bummer on the Steel Diver.
Anyways, I still need to decide on a first game. Perhaps this one?
I'm still not sold on this. It just doesn't seem as good as the first two. From all the reviews I've read I think ill pass till it comes down in price. Good review though Corbie and keep them coming. Don't forget our review of radiant historia I the mix of all this 3ds goodness!!
When you crash, do you crash like in Pilotwings 64 where your character screams as they plummet to the ground and get their head stuck in a rock ending the mission, or the you just eject using a parachute and only get points deducted? It is kind of a stupid question, but I have fond memories of watching Lark scream like a girl as he bounces of Mt.Rushmore.
I'm getting a scare from the repeated mention of insanely difficult missions, but I love it. :3
Lol, I'm weird I know.
Thanks for the review Corbs.
It's just too bad that the game doesn't have multiplayer and that you can't exchange your highscores or ghost data between systems, the internet or friends. Or did i miss that ?
Ah...between this and Steel Diver as my launch game, I just might have to pick up this one. I manly want one that really shows the 3D and environments well.
Besides i'm all for tackling missions and enjoying free flight, it sounds like a blast!
Thanks for the review, very nice!
I wish they had included more locations than Wuhu island too. I've already flown around the entire thing on Wii Sports Resort. I played the demo, and it just didn't seem all that interesting or fun. Perhaps the later missions get more interesting- but fly to a certain point and take a picture? I mean, how different is that than getting the sightseeing spots on WSR?
It IS a really neat demo for the 3DS, and I wouldn't be surprised if the main purpose of this game was to show off the 3D effect on demo console units in stores. Just doesn't seem worth $40 for me. I'd rather see a Star Fox 64 sequel (I know the remake is coming out, but I already have that on VC, so whatever).
Not sure about buying this! I really hate the graphics style. Wii Sports Resort was also one of the worst retail games I ever bought. But I did like Pilotwings on SNES.
Awesome review Corbs! I think you may have just persuaded me to get Pilotwings Resort
I want a game which TRULY showcases the 3DS' 3D power, and gives the best 'wow' reaction. Given that - is this the game to go for?
please tell me if this game has the birdman suit from pilotwings 64?? i saw the squirrel suit? but is there a birdman?
Great Review! I'm still wondering if you can fly over to the golf course area of the island. I've seen a screenshot that shows it in the distance, but I haven't seen any screenshots of the player flying above the golf course itself...
Ahhh now that is a good review corbs. I think we can agree on that one mate
I'm glad I chose this as my first 3DS game.
I was torn between this an Super Monkey Ball & I think I will go for this one first.
My brain can't really understand how up is down in flying games. The easy first missions & the ability to just fly around sound like a great entry point for the genre to me.
That & I'm sure that Super Monkey Ball will go down in price soon, Nintendo's games generally hold their value.
This is definitely the game to show off the 3D power. Fly directly at a mountain with the 3D turned off and you don't know how far away you really are. Turn the 3D back on and you can actually see how far away you are. Everyone should at least try it out at Best Buy or something even if they don't want to buy this one because it really shows off the possibilities.
@36 But if the gameplay is the same, than who cares?
Perhaps more 'maps' will be released as DLC... if Nintendo finally do DLC. They've got all these features like SpotPass and Sky 3D streaming, but have yet to nail the basic fundamentals of a good online system like a proper online gaming profile, downloadable content, voice chat, a way to message friends quickly and easily, etc.
It's like building with concrete on mood. Impressive for a while, but it can't hold up without proper foundations.
Nice review Corbs. I might end up getting this game after all. My biggest concern was if the game had enough content to justify the $40 price. It seems that it does and it sounds like a lot of fun as well. I never played Wii Sports Resort so this will be my very first trip to Wuhu Island. It will be an all new experience for me. I definitely want a game that can show off the 3D capabilities of the 3DS. Nice to hear that this game delivers in that regard. I am really looking forward to playing this one.
@Corbs: I know that you will be reviewing Rayman next but do you know who will be reviewing Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars? That is the one 3DS game that I am the most interested in.
I really enjoyed flying over Wuhu Island in Wii Sports Resort so this was a must have for me.
(Only 3 more sleeps to go!)
My 3 pre-orders have passed the NL revw test Ie. SSFIV 9/10, SMB 8/10 and now PR 8/10 (also 81% by ONM, 75% by N-Gamer). Yipee! Every revw I've read has said PR is really good. Can't wait to try this.
Meh, I'll wait for more interesting 1st-Party material to come out.
BTW, is anyone doing the Lego Star Wars 3 Clone Wars revw? Hopefully an April purchase.
Great review! It makes me think that this game will be packed!
But I gotta ask, I'm having trouble picking for launch :S would this be a better choice, or monkey ball? I'm looking for something that will provide me hours of enjoyment, I'm a hardcore gamer so I kinda like it when things take long. XD
Perhaps I should skip both of them all together? I'm already getting SSFIV 3D and Rayman anyway
All 3DS launch titles will be reviewed, although some will have to wait until after launch as we only have two 3DS units currently.
I already decided to get this game, along with Steel Diver
Great review Corbs. I'm on still on the fence with this one though. The time of day feature though; is it similar to how WSR was in which you pick a time of day or is it based on the 3DS' clock?
Off Topic Question:
Will you guys have either an Asphalt 3D or Lego Star Wars III review up by Sunday?
Launch day purchases = SSFIV & Pilotwings resort.
Yesterday I tried the 3ds at bestbuy
It was so good that I preordered it
And this was the demo I played so yeah It was pretty cool
@WaveBoy
I couldn't have said it better myself - RE: your first comment at least.
I'd go as far as to say the "Pilotwings" series as we know it is essentially over with the release of this game - Nintendo won't be going back to the quirky direction of the previous games and that's sad.
But going on to my thoughts on the game itself, I had a small problem during my short time with the game at the roadshow - namely, I found it difficult to judge distance properly. I'd be flying my light plane towards a corona and I'd "hit" it earlier than I'd expected to.
It was definitely the best use of 3D I saw at the roadshow though. Along with the built in AR games.
@edhe I experienced something similar during my very brief demo time with the game. I believe its something that some people might just need a little time with before their eyes get used to viewing the 3D world.
Must be you're not used to the 3D yet, because I had absolutely no problem whatsoever with distance, in fact to me, the 3D made it much easier to judge distance, especially for landing.
@EmpireIndustries - No, the reviewers that are handling those two titles won't even have a system until Sunday on launch day. Sorry.
I can't wait. < 3
Awesome review Corbie!
This and Rayman are the two games I'll be picking up on Sunday morning. This review just confirms that everything I wanted in the game is there, easy to brutal difficulty spike. Loads of missions, etc. It's just been so dang long of a wait for a new Pilotwings that I can hardly stand the last few days of waiting to get my hands on this game, and not to mention 3DS for the first time.
I've played 12 of the launch titles so far and Rayman isn't even CLOSE to the weakest of that bunch IMO. In fact, I'm liking it so far.
Great review. This is one of the games I pre-ordered. I'm also glad you didn't count Wuhu Island as a negative. People seem to forget about game play is more important to this game then the setting. Looking to the SNES version proved that.
The thing I'm looking to is is if you can decide to not pull the parachute when sky diving like in the original.
Huh, so funny how your and IGN's review kinda contradict each other. You say the graphics of Wuhu are nice and crisp while they say they're overused. You think the controls are great and they think they're not as precise as one would have liked. You don't really like the difficulty and that the earlier ones are "relaxing" meanwhile they say they are "mind-numbingly dull" and well it seems that the second half of the levels are extremely hard, so what about DK Returns? Everything past the cave world was hard, and yet people praised the game for its difficulty, hmm. Bottom line, this review is better suited for those that are more or less casual, meanwhile IGN's focuses more on the smaller, more exact things.
I don't think that there's anything wrong at all with the difficulty of the game, but it's something that needs to be addressed considering not just core gamers read these reviews. I personally loved the rather steep step up in difficulty in the later classes myself. There's also nothing wrong with wanting a more "arcade" control feel, rather than the more realistic aircraft scheme the game makes use of. Monster Games just chose to make it a bit more authentic in the way the game controls and feels.
And I didn't contradict them on the visuals. They are nice and crisp, but you could easily argue that they're overused since they were used in Wii Sports Resort. This review is just exactly like any other review, it's yet another look at a game from another perspective.
It's fun to read Corbie's reviews and his tweets about these 3DS launch games, it is like he is chronicling a journey as he takes in early 3DS treats from Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition to Super Monkey Ball 3D and now Pilotwings Resort, with Rayman 3D next. Great stuff.
The 3DS launch is the most indecisive that I've been about picking which title to buy first, with DS and GBA I knew which games I wanted from the outset. After reading this review Pilotwings Resort has become my top contender, though. I understand the arguments that there have been changes to the series since the SNES and N64 games and I realise that some people are saying that the presentation of this one loses some of the goofy, quirky designs of Pilotwings 64, but I still think there is a lot of charm and Nintendo style lavished on Wuhu Island.
I need to make my mind up fast, there are only three more days to go.
Flying games are boring if you can't shoot at enemies that also shoot back.
No multiplayer? In a Mii game? Seriously?
Is it worth the purchase? I really, REALLY want to know before launch...
I think most people will really enjoy the game. I can say this: Pilotwings Resort is currently the only 3DS game that I've gone back and played after I finished reviewing it so far.
Mmmmmm sounds good but is it worth £40 pound? I only buy one game at launch and i wanna find game that last me at least two months so looking more at dead or alive, street fighter 4 or samari warriors.
1 and a half days till the 3DS Launch at Europe...WOOOOT, can't wait!! Aqua Blue 3DS here I come!!
=D
I wonder how this game will compare to Steel driver in terms of Gameplay depth. I was thinking about getting Steel Driver, but the IGN review noted that the game was lacking in the depth department, so I may just stick with PilotWings. Still, I am awaiting NintendoLife's opinion on the matter. Pilotwings looks really good, and I'm glad that they have given use the option to transfer our old Miis over from Wii console.
Why those graphics? I'm pleased the 3DS was made, but def disappointed with this game from what I've read and seen so far.
I won't support the laziness of using the Wii Sports Resort island again...
Yeah because they've certainly never used the Mushroom Kingdom more than once.
I see you know how to turn something "bad" into something good, huh?
How about a new 3DS Zelda, where the entire game takes place on Wuhu?? or the next Mario... no, AND the next Mario... in fact why bother making any new environments at all??
i have discoverd wuhu island on wii fit and done everything on wii sports resort so my 2 picks are super street fighter and super monkey ball. there is not much other than the missions and 3d that iam missing here plus i heard you can beat it with in 2-4 hours and monkey ball has loads of content along with street fighter.
This is one of my first day buys. I Love Wuhu island on wii sports resort! I can not wait till Sunday!
@Corbs
how does the 3d work for this game, i tried it at a Best Buy near but i didn't really quite get it i felt like i had to cross my eyes
Got it. Spot on revw. Good game. Woohoo.
How long will this game take to finish, roughly? how many hours?
Wow, gamestop has bought out nintendo life 0_0 lol referring to the ads
I WANT IT NOW! i don't even want to know how many hours i spent in resort flying around is there an option to listen to SD card music, because Minecraft music would make it really nice if not, i hope it's in a future update (i think i read somewhere they can update games now) also, if they can update, maybe some islands you can buy with your walking point things?
excellent fun I'm not sure why all the talk is about it being easy. Pilotwings Resort seems pretty challenging to me. but i am a slow learner. and not the greatest at beating many games. ...love this game and PES 2011. casual games r fun.
This is a ridiculously good game. Can't get enough of it, and am currently 5 hours in, just seen the credits for the first time, unlocked the extra class and haven't even touched free flight mode.
I will buy this one for sure, used.
not paying 40 dolalrs for this, but its on my wanted list in the future.
@msephton I agree with you, but we've approached it differently. I'm over 5 hours in and have spent a lot of time in free flight mode but struggle with the missions. The missions are a little too hard for my taste, but still the game is a blast. If I ever make it through the missions, I'll probably be up over 20 hours in play time.
I have see so many reviews of this all different...... I need some more 3D love for my 3DS, dont know if I want to spent £26 on this or wait till it goes down in price some more.....
This game is balanced to perfection. A complete joy and work of art from start to finish, and will take you 10-15 hours to get 100% and perfect on everything. Despite there being only one island (a major hangup for a lot of reviewers) it is constantly inventive and full of surprises. It took my 9h30 to three-star all 42 missions and find everything in free Flight Mode. In fact, Free Flight mode took me longer than mission mode. I'm going to chip away at getting perfects now...very tricky... I could be a while!
I can see the next Mario Sports Title to use Wuhu Island or even SSB, but I doubt Zelda would use it
This game is one of the few launch titles with real value gameplay (just not content), but being just WSR in Pilotwings-mode is a dissapointment. I mean, seriously, next Wave Race is like the WSR jet ski racing?! Ah, it actually would look like that, since Nintendo already stated, WSR jet ski racing is better than Wave Race could have ever been...
I purchased this game today. It is a great game! It needs a little more content + customization, and could use multiplayer. I agree, It's a little much for 40$, but It's a good launch title by far. The 3D Depth is really cool as well. It gets challenging also. Getting Street Fighter Tuesday. If your thinking of purchasing this game, and haven't decided yet, I suggest to purchase it. It is so easy to pick up, impossible to put down.
I really, really want to have this game, but when I tried the demo, I couldn't figure out how to turn the airplane off. Apparently, it's just me, but I can't stand having something dangling in front of my face when flying a plane. Did I miss it, or there really is no way to hide the plane? Otherwise, I'd have grabbed it, who cares about food budget for the month.
Ooooo looks good i like look of jet fighter videos on utube:)
how many diroma are there to unlock?
(sorry↑spelt that wrong)
amazing, well i have a question
does pilotwings resort come with
ur 3DS when u get it?
Turns out I can hide the plane. Glider and Jetpack are another matter though. Still it looks good, so I'll probably buy it.
This game is a 4/10 AT BEST! The world you play in seems so dead in comparison to the Wii. Nothing is alive, nothing is moving, and it’s just a static world. There is a constant time limit so you can never just sit back and enjoy the game. The game play is so repetitive that after a few hours you will question why you paid so much for this shovelware 3D gimmick of a game. The characters feet stick out of the screen (thanks to the 3D) but this is not a good thing. Your eyes will naturally focus on what is in the foreground (the feet) and the rest of the visuals become blurry and start to hurt your eyes after a few levels. There is no online play, no leader boards, no reason to play it more than once. I’m just glad I got it for $4.95 because it doesn’t make me feel like I got ripped off.
Not as "long overdue" as Uprising! XD
Pilotwings music keeps me loving the series. Glad to hear gameplay is enjoyable cause I would hate to buy a 3DS game, built for 3D, as just a CD.
I played the demo and i can give you advice dont play it with the 3d slider all the way up you'll end up seeing two pilots and losing the sweespot quite often just keep it mid way
I just got this on sale from Gamestop for $15, and it's well worth the price! I am LOVING it !! My favorite is Free Flight mode. I love flying around the island at night. So pretty. Oh yes, and I can't wait to finish more missions. Now, what's this about a Squirrel Suit? I think this is a fantastic game, well deserving of 8 or even 9 stars
Hey gang, this game is on sale used on Amazon for under $20! And at Gamestop. Just make sure it comes with the box! You can register it at Club Nintendo for coins if it has the registration card inside like mine did.
Depending on if I can get a raincheck for this at best buy tomorrow I'll get this. $4.99 seems like a great price for this game.
The 3D on this game is great. The only problem with this game is constant repitition. Nonetheless, Nintendo deserves a pat on the back for such a lag-free game. Awesome!
My second 3DS game! Love it to death.
it's only 9.99, and is really fun.
I WANT THIS! I love flying games like this~
The basis of this game is fun, but I think there are a lot of missed opportunities. How about leaderboards, online or even between accounts, that show how high you scored in missions or how fast you completed them, or how about multiplayer flying/dogfighting? That was a function in the original Wii Sports Resort version, and while I don't know whether it was a function in the earlier Pilotwings games, I still think they've easily could've included it, even if it was wireless play only. Still, I do like the game. I got it for 20 euros, and I do think it was worth that
@Goomba77 Sounds great.
Very nice, relaxing game. Worth a try even its quite old.
@premko1 Thanks!
@Spoony_Tech Resort is easily the best Pilotwings game by far.
