With Mario's 35th-anniversary celebrations wrapping up for good today, Nintendo has taken the time to give thanks to its fans for celebrating another milestone year in the great plumber's history.
It's been quite the ride for gaming fans since Mario's first title back in 1985, and while this year's celebrations will likely be remembered more for all the wrong reasons, we did get to enjoy some great new Mario-based fun in his 35th year.
On Twitter, the company has followed up on a message shared to its Japanese channels earlier today, saying, "Thank you to everyone who joined us in commemorating the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. We hope you continue to Power-Up and enjoy Mario and friends’ adventures!"
Now, all eyes fall to The Legend of Zelda, another major Nintendo series celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Nintendo seemingly ignored Zelda's big day earlier this year, but will we be treated to some welcome announcements later in the year? Or how about any of the other games celebrating milestone anniversaries this year?
Time will tell, but for now, here's to another 35 years of Mario!

I got my 3D All-Stars and 35th anniversary pins, so I'm happy.
RIP Mario. You had a good run.
Nintendo better actually de-list 3D All Stars or my wife will murder me for lying to her about it after buying it. Lol
Only joking, of course. I don't think anyone likes this and for good reason.
Thanks for what ? 🤨
And what kind of celebration if the anniversary quickly plugged out from eshop / retail shop like it was never happened ?
I bought 3D All Stars in hurry just to secure Mario Sunshine in Switch version despite i'm not in the mood to play 3D Mario games at the moment.
It wasn't fun to buy the game by under pressure with time limit.
If the game didn't get limited time, i will buy the game next year.
And beside.... My Ratchet & Clank PS3 games are still way much better and fun than Mario Sunshine in term of control schemes and shooting the targets. FLUDD control schemes was a mess.
3 NL articles on this topic today (and counting) ... roll on tomorrow 👍
"and while this year's celebrations will likely be remembered more for all the wrong reasons"
By you lot, yeah...
I loved the Year of Mario and playing through all the games again (especially Sunshine) playing ones I'd never tried (Mario Galaxy!) and unlocking all the levels/icons in the free Mario 35. =)
I only wish Mario Paint and Mario RPG would have been added to the SNES app on Switch as part of the celebrations, but hopefully at some point.
We want our Mario crops back in Story of Seasons.
@CrazyCats wait for it... Nintendo US are bound to Tweet about it, giving us an excuse for at least 1 more article to come...
This has come out of the blue, I really wish we had some news about this earlier rather than waiting for the last day!!!!!
I've literally saved up for zelda 35 for so long, if they don't release anything...
Here's a thought I just had: Nintendo has been treating Mario's 35th Anniversary with a similar level of hype comparable to the Year of Luigi from years back. but yet, why didn't Nintendo yank all of the Luigi-centric games released in that timespan when the green guy's year of celebration ended? Or to re-word the question, why could Nintendo just leave the 35th Anniversary games alone?
I guess what I'm trying to say is this is so unnecessary. But I know I'm preaching to the choir — the same choir that has been preaching this sermon for months — so I guess it is what it is. shrugs
Hmm, wonder if everyone complaining about this has already bought it. And if so...what are you doing with your lives?
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again:
1) Mario is actually 40 this year, along with DK. They could very easily go into celebrating that tomorrow... Or Luigi’s 38th...
2) the Zelda 25th and 30th celebrations weren’t announced until E3 at the earliest. Not mentioning it in February is on form for them (despite the actual anniversary date). Be patient...
It's not like there isn't other stuff to play...
35 isn't even a proper anniversary to celebrate anyway. We going to have all this drama again for the 40th?
And thank you Nintendo for making my extra Mario All Stars copy doubling the re-sell price.
Rest in peace
@Inc Nintendo seems to enjoy the drama.
@tourjeff doubtful. It's not a rare game by any means.
@Xenobound94 the Year of Luigi was during the Reign of Iwata (RIP). New management, new marketing ploys.
Although New Super Luigi U was a limited physical release at the time - they just didn’t pull it from the schedule at the end.
Then again, Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition had a similarly short release period as DSiWare back in 2011, so maybe nothing has changed.
I hope this is just a well thought out April Fools joke .. and when we all wake up Mario will still be on the shelves +!!
Nintendo be like ... Got Ya's +!! .. Mario aint going anywhere Fools +!!
@Clyde_Radcliffe But they never stopped selling their anniversary titles from the Wii era within a short time period, at the very least much longer than that. They went out of their way to make the Metroid Prime Trilogy more accessible with a longer run compared to 3D All-Stars. They even added MPT to the Wii U eShop, which is still available for download to this very day.
Maybe we'll laugh at this years from now if Nintendo re-releases 3D All-Stars in a similar fashion as MPT. But ultimately, at the moment, the comparisons to those anniversary titles aren't exactly 1:1 in proving Nintendo is guilty of similar behavior during the Wii or Wii U days.
Don't have anything to complain about.
The event came and went, Nintendo said what the deal was beforehand, and I got everything I wanted within the generous timespan given.
If you're still complaining about this, time to move on with your lives.
@Mr-Fuggles777,
Yes, you would think this site would have mentioned all this stuff before today, how could we possibly prepare for this life ending situation, without an article or two, or three, or four, to just let is down gently.
@CrazyCats I will admit that while I don't like the practice, it seems like gaming outlets appreciate the amount of stories they get to write about it. Gets them all the clicks they want.
Was a great Mario anniversary. Got everything I wanted that was announced.
I know that the Japanese don't use profanity and deliberate rudeness in the same way that many other cultures do. It's more like, insult by lack of formality.
I take it, then, that this is how Nintendo tells people to Switch Off. I'll have to memorize that phrase, then - "We hope you continue to Power-Up". For the moment, my dollars will indeed continue to enjoy some adventures - from other publishers...
@Xenobound94
It was an experiment. The time limit may have coerced a lot of people to buy the game instead of postponing it all the time. Nintendo are now counting the money, and figuring out whether or not it was worth it financially. If it worked with enough people, it is a success, and it is more likely that things like this may happen again.
@gaga64 the stand-alone New Super Luigi U isn't a good comparison simply because that was specifically the "collector's" edition (in a green case) of sorts. Pretty much the rest of New Super Mario U's physical run sometime after that released included the Luigi U DLC, so the game itself was never fully pulled. Never mind the fact the Luigi U DLC for NSMBU is still available to download on the Wii U to the very day.
In fact, Luigi U's run is more similar to the Wii release of Super Mario All-Stars for Mario's 25th Anniversary: it's initial release was a special edition of sorts, then it's second run was sold without the special box, CD, and booklet as a part of the Nintendo's Selects budget line. And honestly, that is a MUCH better way of handling these kinds of releases, in my opinion.
With that all said, I do agree with you wholeheartedly the Iwata touch made a huge difference in how Nintendo handled releases back then. RIP Iwata, you beautiful soul.
@gaga64 Mario is 40 yes. But "Super Mario Bros" (the NES game) is 36 now.
NintendoLife I appreciate news is slow at the moment but is there really need for another article on this topic? That's 3 today and it's not even lunchtime.
@CrazyCats ”It’s one day since....”
I'm fine with All Stars being a limited release but I can't agree with Mario 35 being taken away. It's such a fun game.
Any bets on how many more articles about this we will see today? Probably another three at least.
@gergelyv You're probably right, unfortunately. My initial post was mostly looking at it from a consumer's standpoint, because the way Nintendo used to handle these things was much more consumer-friendly. But your point about Nintendo experimenting with this practice recently and trying to see if it will increase their profit is probably not too far off from the truth.
Now the wait begins for Zelda's 35th Anniversary celebration.
@gergelyv
Right, just because Nintendo did it one way 10 years ago, that doesn't mean the same business model applies 10 years later.
On top of that, the landscape has changed a bit too.
Anyway, seems like this anniversary was a success, all things considered.
Thank heavens! We can finally move on
For Zelda’s 35th anniversary I hope Nintendo celebrate by releasing the Metroid prime trilogy 😋
I, for one, welcome our new Super Mario 3D All-Stars DX (featuring Dante from Dev- I mean, featuring Super Mario Galaxy 2) overlord due to arrive in 5 years.😎
@nhSnork New Super Mario 3D All-Stars U Deluxe & Knuckles Returns (featuring Dante from Devil May Cry) Definitive Edition plus Bowser's Kranky Mode
We are thanking you by delisting games.
They hope we continue to enjoy the game they’re pulling from sale? Have they all just got drunk and forgotten what they’re doing?
Despite not understanding how this business model can ever work, I got the all-stars and I'm happy with it.
Ryan... Nintendo haven't forgotten about Zelda's anniversary. They have NEVER celebrated it based on the Famicom release. It's always been by the NES release which isn't until July! I honestly don't understand the purpose of this article
@Ajent What you're saying only would make sense if Super Mario 3D Allstars and Super Mario Bros 35 were the only Mario games that ever existed.
I'm happy that I picked up a copy of 3D All-Stars at launch, as I had a lot of fun playing the games. It was great to go back and play Super Mario Galaxy again, as well as experiencing Super Mario 64 for the first time.
This limited thing is just really stupid. Hell the whole Nintendo online service has been a joke. Renting Nes and snes games through an app on your switch instead of oh i don't know being able to buy them and keep them forever!
Yeah I'm still mad about the virtual console getting the axe. I bought over 300 games on the Wii and how much money i must have spent i don't even want to know.
The switch might be Nintendo's biggest seller to date but it ain't perfect. Not even close.
@stinky_t "...for Nintendo Switch™"
@Dr_Lugae ??? No it wouldn’t. They’re the games they’re pulling from sale, Mr Pedantic.
My point is that the statement is disingenuous. Didn’t think I’d have to spell it out.
JEEZ-US, everyone one of you sound like a bunch of whinny F***ing SNOWFLAKES. WAH they are taking away a game that sucks but because they are taking it away I am going to cry and pout and hold my breath until I get something, because I am part of the participation trophy snowflake generation <------- That is you all sound.
@Ajent Not being pendantic,
"We hope you continue to Power-Up and enjoy Mario and friends’ adventures!"
How did you get that Mario and friends adventures doesn't refer to the other dozen Mario, Toad, Yoshi and Luigi games on Switch?
I'm still hoping for Super Mario Galaxy 2 in HD once the anniversary is out of the way. Seeing the first game in HD was lovely.
Nintendo casts Vanish, then Doom on Mario!
[Insert Mario death animation noise]
I’m so sad Mario 35 is disappearing. If a Zelda game in the same style appears I will be ok though. Why they don’t make a permanent game like Mario 35 but more like NES remix is beyond me. NES Remix Online would be a great online component to Switch Online. Make it Nintendo!!!
@Dr_Lugae because context. Like I said, I shouldn’t have to explain. Read the article and understanding the context shouldn’t be too hard. In the context of the article and the games being removed, my comment makes sense (again) in highlighting Nintendo’s flippant statement.
I bet I'm the only person here that didn't buy 3D All-Stars and didn't play Mario 35 and doesn't care that both are going away tomorrow.
@Tyranexx
My analogy with FF XIII style. 🤭
Nintendo (Fal'cie) put a curse on Mario with L'Cie brand on his chest.
As L'Cie, he has 6 months to fulfill his Focus (Peoples bought 3D All Stars before 6 months left)
When you bought 3D All Stars right on time, Mario will turn into Crystal for eternal life.
But if you bought the game late, Mario will turn into Cie'th.
@Bearzilla823 While I'm not a fan of your rhetoric, I agree that people shouldn't be as mad about it as they are. There are far greater injustices in the world and it's not like you can't pick up these titles somewhere else. Sunshine is the only one of these games not re-released before, but even the Switch port is deficient compared to the original.
@Thaliard How is Sunshine deficient compared to the original? If you mean the controls you now play it with a GameCube controller and analogue triggers since the update. You can also have the camera either inverted or non inserted now too.
Aside from that the Switch version is in wide-screen and HD.
@Bearzilla823 Plus emulation still exists, you can play all of those titles in native widescreen and 4K on PC with the original controllers if you have the USB adapters. Not a big deal in the end.
GEE THANKS NINTENDO
MARIO: dies
LUIGI: Luigi number one! 😏
Thanks Mario — all the pipes are fixed and we had a lot of fun. Now — who is this handsome pointy ears guy?
Well, they killed him. This is quite literally the opposite of what they used to intend to do! That being making money overtime and keeping customer trust. What customer trust do they have now? None from me, I assure you!
Meh, I'm just glad 3D World got ported. I had more fun with Bowser's Fury than anything on All-Stars.
Limited releases are crap tho.
@Anti-Matter Anti-Matter I agree. I was forced to buy them through an installment plan so I wouldn't miss out. Nintendo should be ashamed to do this to the true fans. Like you said, Nintendo is saying you have to buy our games now, so wait to buy your PS5 games. And so we keep having to pay for whatever item Nintendo has made the item of the month, like the Monster Hunter controller and figures. And I bought 3D All-Stars and I don't even have time to play it. So money for nothing.
Now get on with the Metroid celebration please.
This is nothing but a way for Nintendo to push sales in a short period of time. Let’s hope this trend doesn’t continue.
I wonder what the comments look like on that tweet. Lol
Mario is not dying so STFU people.
THE END OF DAYS IS UPON US!!!!!!!
"Thank you so much for playing my games!" - Mario
Dont forget to pick up Fire Emblem as well since it becomes delisted as well.
Nintendo is just so far behind PlayStation superiority it's laughable. They're just always behind the times and can't keep up with the competition. Nintendo kills the digital availability of some of their most beloved Mario games, while Playstation kills THE ENTIRE STORE! Laughable! Figure out the internet, Nintendo!
(I wonder if I needed a sarc tag on that. Probably. It's the internet.)
It's now Luigi's time to shine
I still think it's pretty stupid to wipe out the entire existence of this Mario collection from the Eshop.
Cue the release of Mario Galaxy 2, please
@Anti-Matter this confused me just as much as FF13s storyline. Slow clap
So what is NintendoLife going to do now that they can't reuse the same article day after day reminding people that March 31st is the last day for Mario stuff?
It's all very weird. I get not-producing any more physical copies, but to say, "We put a lot of time and money into this collection, and will continue to host this game on our servers, but we don't want to make any more money off of it." is a strange choice.
@NEStalgia every PS is the console of the Gods. Do not compare them to the mortal consoles from Nintendo and you will certainly live a better life.
Guys my Mario amiibo, and copy of 3D all stars are gone!
(Sarcasm)
Looking forward to the article about NOA tweeting this out.
"Thanks for giving us your money and proving that you suckers will actually eat this up. If you had complained we might have listened but you proved you're obedient little sheep, so we'll keep doing things like this. Thank you!"
@Pak-Man The thing is that they didn't even put much effort into the collection. As far as remasters go, what we got with the collection was very very bare bones.
You had over 5 months to buy it. It's not like they just put it up for a week and yanked it back. Either buy it or don't. This isn't buying a car or taking out a mortgage. Yeesh.
In other news, limited time offers continue to be offered for a limited time only. Super exciting stuff.
To add fuel to the fire:
They should make a South Park episode based on this: Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Butters try to save Mario from losing his job at Nintendo by preventing his anniversary merchandise from being discontinued. Cartman tries to foil their plan because he purchased a boatload of these merchandise to scalp once Mario merchandise is no longer sold in stores. Meanwhile in Canada producers of Terrence and Philip consider copying Nintendo by making the cartoons available for only a limited time for their 25th anniversary.
@Don I would buy the movie version!
It's March 31st and I couldn't be happier. But what will I read about tomorrow?
I know the situation sucks but, what have you been doing for six months if you haven't bought the game already?
Goodbye sweet prince
Mario is not dead, he gonna apear in Mario Golf Star Rush.
thanks Mario for your amazing games, my favorite 2D Mario game is Super Mario World and my favorite 3D Mario game is Super Mario Odyssey.
@invictus4000 is full of people making jokes Mario is dead/sad that Mario is dead, and now is time for Legend of Zelda 35th anniversary to shine.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Except Mario Paint initially used a mouse so that might not be possible without some clever techniques!
@GamingDude800 Believe it or not the Switch supports a USB mouse! You can use one for Hypnospace Outlaw.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Yeah but I am talking about handheld mode because unless Nintendo makes the Switch's touchscreen emulate the SNES mouse then it may not be possible but then again I would personally prefer a remake of Mario Paint on the Switch rather than just a straight up port of the SNES original!
@Anti-Matter Heh, that works pretty well too!
Ripperoni in pepperoni
@Bearzilla823 the fact is that's its uncalled for to do things like this, what if this becomes an industry standard like day one DLC and busted broken game releases at full price only to hope for fixes months and months down the road? If this becomes lucrative enough other companies will follow suit and in order for some fans to get classic games, remakes or limited time releases piracy will become more necessary so ce there won't be any other legal means to play them, Tetris 99 is a really fun game that is free and has a strong community, what if it was only out for 6 months tho? Fans would have no way to play it and anyone who missed out would never get a chance, now charge 60 bucks plus tax for it..... You then see how scummy and anti-consumer this is, this should be upsetting, I already have to use emulators to play some wii games with my kids since they are hard to find for a reasonable price and have no HD upscaling and were never re-released, this is a big problem for longevity, you just sound ignorant.
Gee, thanks Nintendo... for being anti consumer.
Yeah ^3^ thank you Nintendo for this awesome three game, tee-hee ^3^~♡
"We hope you continue to Power-Up and enjoy Mario and friends’ adventures!" Surely they didn't miss the irony here.
@Luffymcduck Someone at Nintendo thought the Disney Vault strategy was a good idea!
