Following the official North American 3DS launch at Best Buy in New York back in March, Nintendo is to continue its relationship with the retailer by offering exclusive downloadable content for the console at around 1,000 stores from 7th June.
As well as offering 3DS users access to the SpotPass service, which sees the console automatically connect to an available Wi-Fi hotspot to download new information, visitors will also be able to download exclusive content including movie trailers and gaming extras.
The service will kick off on 7th June, just after the 3DS eShop update.
Nintendo and Best Buy to Bring Custom Downloadable Content to Nintendo 3DS Owners
Nintendo 3DS Will Connect Automatically to Best Buy Wireless Hot Spots
REDMOND, Wash. & MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo and retail partner Best Buy are collaborating to give Nintendo 3DS™ owners customized, automatic wireless access at some 1,000 select Best Buy store locations nationwide beginning June 7. Once connected, the service will provide access to a variety of fun content via the system’s built-in Wi-Fi functionality, including the new SpotPass™ feature. The Best Buy service will also include exclusive offers as well as additional entertainment content such as gaming extras and movie trailers. Nintendo 3DS, which lets people see 3D visuals without the need for special glasses, launched March 27 at a suggested retail price of $249.99.
“Nintendo 3DS turns the page in portable gaming not just because of the stunning, glasses-free 3D visuals, but also in the way it keeps people connected to their friends, their games and their world,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “Best Buy provides a firsthand look at the platform with experts to help people understand everything it offers.”
“We want our customers to fully tap into the potential of their Nintendo 3DS device, so we’re pleased to offer free access to special Wi-Fi and SpotPass content in-store,” said Chris Homeister, senior vice president of entertainment for Best Buy. “As a retail partner for SpotPass, this is another way that we’re delivering best-in-class gaming experiences at our stores across the country.”
Remember that Nintendo 3DS features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo3ds.com.

Remember, SpotPass only works when the wireless is switched on.
The E3 conference better knock my socks off.
I wonder if this will work if your sitting in your car in the parking lot or if you will have to take your 3DS in the store
Man, I'm hoping I'm not missing out on much, as we're lacking a Best Buy.
I'm a little paranoid about walking into a Best Buy store with my 3DS. I wouldn't want to be accused of pilfering when I walk past the registers with an obvious, square electronics device in my pocket, its LEDs flashing.
is there any news on anything like this for the uk
We have a best buy but my 3DS hates most wi fi hot spots and won't connect.
Yes! There's a Best Buy within walking distance from my apartment.
Cool, I'll actually be near a Best Buy that day.
Will we be able to stand outside a Best Buy to get this content? I really don't want to walk in and out of there with a 3DS in my pocket. Employees will think I'm stealing something. :/
It's good they offer content though i hope no one will miss out on good stuff if he can't go there. And it could be a good place to get StreetPassed then too.
Cool, hopefully my local bestbuy is on the list so I can go snag the free stuff!
sweet it only takes like twentyfive minutes to get to closest bestbuy
Movie trailers eh, very nice.
What's in store? Me going green with envy >: (
niiice! i hope best near me will have this. it better do.
this is what nintendo doesn't get about here in the states: a large part of the population is rural. that's why street pass bombs for many people. we just do not have the density of population that japan does, yet they keep making deals that exclude much of the population. i would think it is the same in australia, another country that is spread out.
nintendo needs to hear about this new thing called 'the internet' and learn how to use it to their buyers' benefit.
Why limit this to specific stores? Content like this should be available to everyone online.. This just once again shows how archaic Nintendo's views on online content are.
Why.... why don't we have best buy over here
A Best Buy is only 5 minutes away from me
But this is really exciting. My 3DS has YET to get a spotpass hit or even get a spotpass notificiation from my own Wireless Router- mind you, there's 6 other wireless routers up in the area. Hoping Nintendo's June update can fix this.
Interesting... too bad my nearest Best Buy is 10 miles away. Hope they plan to spread this to a McDonald's or something.
Sigh.. another thing i'll be missing out on... Just look at my flag and you'll know why...
@Everyone:
As long as you show that the system is in your possession when you walk in, you should be fine everyone. I walk into my nearest local Gamestop, Walmart, etc. w/ my camera in it's pouch about my neck, GBA SP in my pocket, I even sometimes take out my camera to take a picture of a product model # for online research later. Just make sure that the associates know the devices are yours. You all should be fine.
i like this idea a lot. all the more reason for me to go out in the world and bring my 3DS with me. huzzah
cant tell you how much i hate best buy, especially in rockford il. recently they replaced most of their movies and music with video games and game demo stations.
@everyone complaining about this stuff not being online, how archaic Nintendo's online system is, blah blah blah.
This is a deal struck with Best Buy. Best Buy is likely PAYING Nintendo to offer this content (much of which will probably be offered online after the BB distribution ends). The benefit of this is that 3DS owners are going into Best Buy and will likely be tempted by games and other tech things Best Buy sells. They will buy said things there, and not at, say, Gamestop or Target.
I'm not sure how this makes Nintendo's online program worse than Microsoft/Sony. Many PS360 games offer exclusive preorder items (costumes, weapons, sometimes even entire missions) for games that are different at every store. Customers have to choose where they want to preorder and no-one has the option of actually getting, you know, the entire game at launch (unless they preorder/buy 5 different copies from different stores). This really isn't that big a deal guys. At least this stuff is free to anyone.
1000 Best Buy stores, hopefully some in Canada. The nearest Best Buy store is like 30 miles away, anyway
_Remember, SpotPass works when the system is in sleep mode.
Why not just do it for everyone with SpotPass?
I hope we could also get this kind of support in my country!
There are 4 Best Buys within 20 miles of my home. I've taken my 3DS into 2 of them w/o being accused of stealing. So, don't worry about that.
i have the face of a criminal. they always think i'm stealing someting >.<
If best Buy is running this promotion, I think they'll expect to see people walking around the store with 3DS systems. In other words, no arrests.
Yeah, they have gotta expect people to bring their 3DSs. If they don't believe you, show them your activity log. Or show it to the video camera as you walk into the store so you can show em that as proof. Also my Best Buy is over 200 miles away =(. Hahaha.
Is this best buy in the states alone or also canada?
I have wireless enabled but I disabled street/spot pass functionality. I would have to know what content is there first before I consider turning that function on temporarily.
@Rob_mc_1 The information exchanged from those functions are minimal — only nicknames, birthdates, hobbies, games you love/are playing, and your Mii. If your reason for not turning those on is about privacy issues, there is none, but you will be missing out a lot by not doing so.
@tokengirl: until nintendo learns that there is a huge market for their stuff that do not have easy access to best buys, toys r us, dozens of others around them with 3Dses, etc, then they are failing the consumer.
i repeat: nintendo needs someone to tell them about the 'net and how to put it to use. blah, blah, blah....
@k8sMum: you've missed Token's point — this one isn't really about Nintendo getting the word out about StreetPass/SpotPass/whatev', it's about Best Buy getting people into their stores and buying games there as opposed to buying them at GameStop, Target, Toys 'R' Us, etc. and so forth. Best Buy is probably paying Nintendo quite a bit for the privilege of hosting this program, i'd imagine.
@HADAA My choice is not about privacy concerns.
I hope they have support for Hawaii. We only have two.....one is hard to get to and the other is a ten minute ride away from me. There are way more Gamestops than Best Buys in Hawaii. >_> Beside buying games from Best Buy cost more than Gamestop. (Well here anyway.)
