Today's been a good day for 3DS news. Along with Nintendo's live feed of Satoru Iwata's keynote presentation at GDC 2011, the company has also made several new announcements regarding the upcoming 3DS.
Following Iwata's rather short but sweet hint at a new Mario game for the 3DS, it's been announced that the handheld console will be getting a new instalment in the Super Mario series, featuring traditional Mario gameplay that we've all come to know and love. Developed by Nintendo EAD, the team behind Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel Super Mario Galaxy 2, the 3DS's stereoscopic effects will allow Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto to incorporate depth and distance into a game like never before.
The game's logo that was displayed on stage shows what looks like a tail coming out at the side. Could this suggest gameplay similar to what we saw in Super Mario Bros. 3? At the very least, we might even see the return of the Tanooki Suit!

That's pretty much all that's known about the game at the moment. What kind of game mechanics are you hoping for? A return to the franchise's 8-bit roots, a physics-based adventure like what we've seen in the Super Mario Galaxy series, a mixture of both, or something entirely new and different?

I spot abstract level design. And a possible tanuki suit return.
OMG NO WAIIII!! I was gonna buy Mario Kart 3DS with the money I have left but this is WAI BETTER!! I'm sold, and I don't even know what this Mario game's about.
I can't wait for this one!
AWESOME, Tanooki suit!
Looks like Galaxy-quality graphics, minus the galaxy. I'm in
I predict this will be the greatest video game ever made. There, I said it.
Not that excited yet, looks like Super Mario 64 2, which if anything, would be a step backward from Galaxy. I was hoping for something a little more unique. Still, early days.
I wonder where the location of this game will take place. Possibly across ALTERNATE UNIVERSES? It'd be the only way to out due a space setting.
This looks VERY good.
...and it seems you can shrink and lose your hat in this one. I always liked those features, even though they're technically "bad" for Mario.
I'm thinking we're going to see a seamless mixture of 3D and 2D gameplay in these levels. Galaxy 2 did a lot of this, and I hope the team will expand upon that concept further. It also appears that we'll be back in the Mushroom Kingdom rather than space, but I'll bet the game will sport the same Level-Select Map that Galaxy 2 had, as opposed to a bloated hub world.
@irken that sounds like a good formula to me. I'm definitely hoping for something leaning more towards traditional roots, but those screen shots seem like a whole new situation.
Mario looks small in the lower left pic. I wonder if this is the effect of a new power up or if Mario takes damage he will shrink like in Super Mario Bros.
@irken004: Yup!
Looks like Galaxy... Without a galaxy. Whatver it turns out to be I'm buying.
If this game has three dimensional gameplay, I will have to cry from the sheer epic-ness that this game will be. The team behind Galaxy 1 and 2 can't let me down.
Holy crap, it's mini Mario! And a tanooki tail! These are some good signs that the life meter will be done away with and the game will play more like classic SMB.
It looks a bit too similar to the Galaxy games though, which is worrisome. :/
A blend of 2D Mario elements in a 3D platformer!? It's a dream come true!
It looks perfect.
Shut up and take my money, Nintendo!
Sh*t up and take my money!
Is Nintendo supposed to be making a side-scrolling traditional Mario title AND a 3D Super Mario 64-esque title, or just one of the above? Confused on that issue. At any rate, looking good so far and LOVE the tail teaser!
@BetelgeuseWC77 They're making one of each - a side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. style title, and a 3D Super Mario game like 64 or Galaxy
I hope this one has less linear levels than Galaxy games, I´d prefer something like Super Mario 64.
I do hope it retains some elements from the past 3D Mario games. But still, i wouldn't mind if they took an entirely different direction. It's looking amazing already!
@17
...How is that worrisome? It's actually a good sign...
@James Newton
Thank you for aleviating my confusion. Great story, man! Now I'll express the "shut up and take my money, Nintendo" sentiment, but times two it! Geez, I need to get a job since I have no money trees in my back yard.
OMG! That looks like Galaxy and World combined!
I would really like to see a "Super Mario Bros. 3 part II" or something like that! In my opinion that was the best of the Mario games! And Yes, I know there was Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros DS/Wii, but they didn't have as many cool items and suits that SMB 3 did! It's cool if the Tannoki Suit is back... at last!!! But why haven't I seen The Hammer Bros Suit from SMB 3 in any of these new'er classic Mario games? Imo it's the cool'est powerup that Mario has got! Its hammers could kill almost anything! Really hope it will be back again sometime!
Nevertheless, I'm going to buy this game whatever it turns out to be!
P.S. Will we ever see the green giant shoe again...?! So cool!

2D gameplay would be like winning $1M and buying a used car. Stereoscopic 3D just screams 3D platformers, as their biggest flaw (making precise jumps in a 3D world with a lack of visual depth) is now fixed.
@23 - Great! Then there is still hope!
@30 - Some likes 2D gameplay, others like 3D gameplay!
Let's just be happy that they are making one of each!
Sweet. My 3DS is going to get a lot of love this year.
Looks like the special stages in Sunshine, also known as The Best Parts of Any Gamecube Game.
Looks cool. Looks like Super Mario 64 + Super Mario Galaxy.
@Jon Second to chopping down your neighbour's trees in Animal Crossing.
My heart was lifted when I thought I saw a 3D adventure like Super Mario 64. Then I read the article and once again, I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. Man, lots of disappointments today.
@James: Sorry, I'm not a jerk. =)
it looks like mario can get small in a 3D world. has that ever happened before? Maybe this will mean the disappearance of the health bar
@38 What are you talking about? What disappointments?
Now, hoping to see a New Super Mario World/Super Mario World 3 logo with a cape shadow at the end of the "d". Or wherever else Shiggy wants to put it!
@Tristenj1992
Just commenting on my day.
MY GODNEEEEEEEESS
@Jon That's not what Tom Nook tells me.
WOW the screen shots blew my mind and i'm hoping the Raccoon suit makes a return as well as the Super Guide mode
Amazing, but how will it ever top galaxy?
doesn't feel like going through all of the comments, lol
Looks like its going to have similarities between the Bros. Trilogy (lol) and the 3D platformers...noticed a mini Mario. I sense a difficult/challenging Mario game coming. :3
Tanooki Suit > Racoon Leaf
Methinks 'tis gonna be something like 64
Cannot. Wait.
THIS GAME IS GONNA BE AWESOME!
AWESOME!
I'm glad I preorder myself a 3DS. It's going to be so awesome!
This game will be EPIC, no doubt about it!
These screenshots make it look a lot more like the level designs remeniscant of Super Mario 64 rather than Galaxy, and in my books that is a massive plus.
Why does everybody assume that the Tanooki Suit is making a comeback? For all we know it could be the Super Leaf...or the P-Wing...or the Leaf Suit...or the Leaf Wing...or the P-Leaf
NP drools over the prospect of running around in a frenzy, followed by jumping and shaking a striped appendage, in a 3D Mario game.
I spy lots of floating blocks... Looks like Iwata meant what he said.
WOW, Nintendo has the most loyal fans of any company in the world! As long as it has Mario people are willing to pay for it even before they know barely anything about it.
I'm right there with ya PunnyGuy, I've ALWAYS wanted that. It's been close at times, but not exact. I would like to play a new 3D Mario game 2P simulaneous especially, like a NSMB Wii but in 3D with just 2 people (4 is ok I guess)... THAT is my next dream Mario game, playing both the Mario Bros. together in 3D.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a tough act to follow, if you ask me. It is Mario, but I'll be truly astounded if this one could get me nearly as excited as SMG2.
That may well happen, though. I get a sense from those four screenshots that there will be a lot of levels built to take advantage of the new depth. Wouldn't be the first time Mario's set the standard for 3D gameplay.
This looks like a combinantion between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64. Quit killing my wallet, Nintendo!
Does anybody here remember that comment that Shiggy said back in June. When he was asked about a super mario world sequel, he said, "I don't know. Maybe!" Super Mario World 2!!!
TANOOKI SUIT!!!!!!!!!!!! Dies of joy
SM64 with a Tanooki Suit... YEEEESSSSS!
Can't wait! Hope it's open-world.
^I hope so, too.
Could this be my Mario 64-2 in 3D on 3DS? Holy Carp this is great news!
I hope it's not a rehash in any way
That was why I didn't enjoy SMB wii or Galaxy 2
^How did he miss out? He tried them, just didn't enjoy them. Sounds like he's not missing anything.
Oh, my bad. I read "play" instead of "enjoy".

2D Mario and 3D Mario, best of both worlds? YES!
Inb4 It's named "Super Mario Bros. 4", with a more then likely subtitle of "3D". That's the vibe I'm getting anyway.
No Galaxy? 3D? Mushroom Kingdom adventure!? SMG looking graphics?! Mario!? I'm sold. 3DS, get ready for me..
Mini Mario = Super Mushroom powerup in a 3D adventure
Tail in Mario logo = Return of the Tanooki Suit or Raccoon Leaf?
Developed by the Galaxy team = Insanely creative levels and gameplay mechanics, coupled with beautiful graphics.
Sounds awesome, can't wait for E3!
My only requests:
Bring back the Kuribo's Shoe please! And have different colored Yoshis with special powers (like in Mario World).
I see a tail on the logo!
OOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYGGGGOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm freaking out right now!!!!
A main Mario game being released is always good (yes, even you, Sunshine/SMB2). I hoping this is out before the year is over, but I'm willing to wait as long as it makes the game better.
I don't care what the game is, or whether or not it involves mario. I'm buying it.
This is even more exciting than the announcement of Twilight Princess in E3 2004!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't think nintendo would just reveal this in such as unexpected time!!!!!!!!!
Yes! Just what I said yesterday! A direct sequel to SMB3!
..hopefully..
@26 tristen: It's worrisome because I don't want to buy a game I've already bought twice.
I will regardless, but I'd rather have something new, lol. Also, Mushroom Kingdom > Galaxy. Put Mario back on the ground where he belongs. I never particularly liked the abstract floating layouts in the Galaxy games.
I want the Tail, or the Cape, Give me Nes Mario or Snes Mario. New Super Mario was good but the power ups were Weak!!!
When I first saw this, I was I really hope it's like Galaxy. I used to think the linear 2D Mario games were the best, but after playing Galaxy, fiture 2D games (like NSBWii) just didn't have quite the same appeal (and in all honesty, it seemed more of a gigantic level expansion pack, rather than a standalone game). I'd Love to have Galaxy 3D on the go!
3d racoons
Mario is one of the best game character for me.
OMG! I see the racoon tail on the Title itself! I'm Sold!!!!
Now... if only I could afford a 3DS
As long as it's not Galaxy 3, I'm probably gonna get it.
I'll be watching the development of this.
You can tell it is a Galaxy game. In the 4th picture there's a star coin in the upper left hand corner.
YES THIS LOOKS SO COOL ALREADY!
me needy tanooki suit!
Awwwwwwww! I'm already paying off 4 game titles for the 3DS. Not that this concerns me that much... SORRY.
Super Mario Bros "3"D
It'd be cool if the 3D Mario games have the elements of the 2D Super Mario Bros. games and 2D Super Mario Bros. games have elements of 3D Mario games. Hey, it's only a guess.
lol, if it is a Galaxy game I hope you don't have to shake the device to spin. Hooray for eff'd up 3D viewing and broken screen hinges. o_O
I hope it doesn't have the same gameplay as Mario Galaxy.
I sure love the Super Mario Galaxy games. I would have no problem if this was just SMG 3(D).
YES! YES! YES! (4 DAYS LATER) YES! YES! YES!
omg! a new mario adventue! im gonna cry so hard if its gonna be super mario galaxy 3! its gonna be like playing super mario galaxy the first one all over again the 3rd time!!
It looks very Super Mario 64. So far so good, Nintendo...
If this was a Mario 64 2, with elements borrowed from SMB3, i’d be ecstatic.
Mario Galaxy team: Try to cut back on the linearity this time, please.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I honestly prefer the linear gamelay of SMG2 and the 2D titles. I'm gonna buy this day one for sure!
I don't think the linearity was bad. Just that; the openness of the 3D games is what set them apart from the 2D, therefore unique. Anyway, wouldn’t you rather be able to explore in a 3D world?
The linear stages would work better as bonus levels... not the entire game.
IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
YESSSSS!!! THIS IS AMAZING!!!
Wait, is that a comet coin I spot in one of the screenshots?
Anybody else think small Mario's head is too big in proportion to his body in this new game and in NSMBW?
YESS!! Spiritual successor to Mario 64, that's what they're saying on the streets.
I loved SMSunshine, and the Galaxy games, but it's nice to see a more traditional Mushroom Kingdom 3D style Mario platformer/adventure. It looks nice so far. It's nice to see the logo's teasing a new item, or a return of the beloved Raccoon/tanooki power-up. (Wich I always prefered over the cape & wing cap personally.)
I hope a "New SMB 3D" is in the works to!
While Galaxy 1 & 2 are ultimate Mario games to end all ultimate Mario games, I still have yet so see a true sequel to Mario 64. Judging by the screen shot, this could be it - or better, the Real Super Mario 128!
And please, Nintendo, bring back a proper 3D hub world for 3D games - SM64, Sunshine, and Galaxy all had fabulous hub worlds. True, Galaxy 2 had Starship Mario, but it is not the same - more of a sandbox rather than a true hub. For future 2D games, please make the overworld map expansive, more like Super Mario World with it's large area coverage, and less like the cookie-cutter 1,2,3,4,5,6... style maps of Mario 3 and New Mario bros
this game is getting no less than a 9.5 i bet!
Considering we only do solid numbers, I think you'll be right
Looks awesome!
I love 8-bit and retro Mario games, but I wouldn't want to see a full 8-bit/2D game. It would be amazing to see a 3D game with parts of 2D, kinda like they did with SMG2. Also, I did kinda miss the hubs in SMG2. And instead of taking Mario to a brand new area, or giving new attacks and powers, I think it needs to back to the basics and have it be inside of mushroom kingdom! Not just in princess peach's castle but the entire kingdom! It would be really neat to explore all of mushroom kingdom, and the could bring the punch and kick from SM64 back!
SUPER MARIO 3DS will look like super Mario Galaxy super Mario galaxy 2 super mario 64 super Mario 64 ds.it like all the 3d mario games but its all with thoe games with super mario bros.
