When it comes to video game carrying cases, few companies consistently roll out products as high in quality as Hori. Not only are their DS and PSP cases favourites among gamers looking for something sturdy and protective to carry their favourite portable game system around in, but their cases are also generally very affordable as well. It's just a shame that more of their products aren't released outside of Japan.
After the success of their line of DS and PSP Pouch cases, Hori are back, this time with a wide range of carrying cases for Nintendo's upcoming 3DS system. We were lucky enough to get our hands on their newest 3DS Compact Pouch case (in beautiful aqua blue) and we decided to put it through its paces and see if it held up to the usual high standards the company has become so well known for over the years.
To begin with, the 3DS Compact Pouch case looks very similar in design to that of their DS line, so much so that at first glance it would be difficult to tell them apart. The case comes in three colours: maroon red, aqua blue, and black, each with a light gray cushioned interior. Once again the case has a few pockets inside that will hold your 3DS game cartridges, although the company chose to do away with the soft plush pockets and have replaced them with a clear plastic vinyl covering that closely resembles the material used in CD carry cases. It's a small change, but at least it will allow you to better see what game you have inside the pocket without having to remove it.
Although this is a soft case, the outer material is fairly sturdy and should offer some protection in the event you drop it with your system inside, but it's easy to see that this Compact Pouch is more about keeping your system protected from scratches than it is saving it from a sizable drop. The case features a double zipper that can be opened from either side and even has the cloth interior wrapped up around the inside in order to keep the zippers from scratching the system, a nice touch if you ask us. You'll also be able to carry three 3DS cartridges inside of the pockets on the inside, also kept far enough away from the system to avoid any scratches.
It's difficult to fault Hori for keeping things simple with their cases and it's one of the things we love about their products. It's also nice to see a carrying case that's as nice to look at as it is functional. The bottom line is, if you're looking for a reliable case to carry that shiny new 3DS system around in and don't mind going to the trouble of importing one, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better case than this Hori 3DS Compact Pouch. And at only $9.99, it's quite the bargain.
Play-Asia currently has these Hori 3DS Pouch cases in stock for $9.99 each.

Wow... This could come in handy!
That looks really nice there
Eh, I usually just keep my DSi in my pocket. To prevent scratches to that beautiful, shiny 3DS exterior however, I ordered one of those carrying pouches from Club Nintendo, and will be sticking my system in that and then into my pocket. I'm sure that'll do the trick just fine.
Nothing but Hori touches my portables. No exceptions.
Just ordered one off play asia for around £6, not bad!
I don't go out with my handhelds usually. My son takes the ds lite out occassionally but we prefer the nice leather pouches which fit perfectly and fold over to be attached by a metal button. They are also easy to leave on the ds lite and play with it at the same time as well as leave on when charger needs attaching. We have one for our dsi too. May get one for the 3DS although that has a charging cradle doesn't it?
Indeed it does LEGEND MARIOID.
Can you buy it in the shops such as GAME™ in the U.K. and how much is it in U.K. money? because I would buy the black version. Needs more game pouches.
ill just keep my mega case.
It holds like 50 games and a charger and stuff. And it's about the size of a 1000 page hardcover books and fitts all ds sizes.
Does the black version have black interior? I don't like white, and it'd get all dirty.
they have these and sturdier ones on amazon as well.
Very nice but, I don't think only 3 games to hold will last long.
I'd rather just get a silicon cover for my 3DS, but these cases are good if you put your 3DS in a bag or backpack to carry it with.
"Always carry protection around with you"...
Hm....
Anyways, I already preordered a better one (for me) off of Amazon, so I'm good.
@12 3 games will last you a while since the battery only lasts 6 hours
Looks good, but I think I'm still leaning towards the 29-game carrying folio bag. I already got a 31-game carrying one for my standard DS. But, early in my collection, I guess my DS one would do, since I can keep 3DS games on the right-hand side so their nubs don't get in the way... unless I think their prongs look sensitive, in which case I may spring for this, heh.
...I'm still using this very old Game Boy Color case. xD
Probably need a new case, but this isn't what I'm looking for. lol
I think I'll be getting the elite transporter case: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11268875&CAWELAID=796029437
this thing can hold 40 game cards!
I'll stick with the carrying bag I had with the first Gameboy. Never left me, that reliable old thing. I like it, and it's kinda a collector's item now.
as it looks as though the 3DS merely sits in this case, why on earth would you play it whilst in the case? right: gonna hold both objects instead of taking it out...very awkward. not a big selling point, imho.
Meh, I never use these things anyways. I always put my DS games in old GB game cartridge protectors.
@k8sMum - That caption was a joke. LOL
HORI is certainly not a bad brand... but there are plenty of other brands that make just as high quality (or better) products, especially with regards to these cases. I ordered a much nicer looking case with 29 slots of game card storage and such for only about $13. The only things from HORI worth getting exited over in my opinion are when they do unique controller designs.
heh the game case from the 19 in 1 starter set is fine for me... plus i still have the diamond and pearl game case that i never used and the one from my dead dsi....
I'm gonna get the 3DS hard case, it's 24.99 at Gamestop but it is a plastic covering that goes around your 3DS to completely protect it if you drop it.
@corbs: to be honest, i wasn't sure it was a joke or not! (sorry about that.) i've had a few cases for both the ds and dsi that i COULD play the games whilst the unit was in them...
just color me dense today...
Seriously, where do you guys put your games?

this Hori pouch looks great, i think i'll get on for my 3DS
Does this case have a loop on the back or something to attach to your belt or something? That's an important feature I look for when purchasing these.
Nope DarkKirby, for some odd reason they got rid of the belt loop on it. Not sure why.
I want a hard case. Hopefully they will release those to the UK.
@Corbs
That's a shame. I've purchased Hori's stuff in the past, as their products are usually high quality. But I need something that can stay on my belt since I don't carry another bag to put this case in around with me. Thanks for the quick response.
Looks comfy. I wish I was a 3DS so I could sleep in there
@moosa: that is a seriously cool case! i can just pop that baby into my purse. thanks for the link.
I don't think I want this. I mean, why can't you just put your 3DS in your pocket when you walk with it. Plus, the pouch just takes up more room. Then again, It is a great game holder, so I might just get it...
Yepp I've ordered one!
