With the recent confirmation that what was shown at E3 was more of a tech demo than work-in-progress, you may be disappointed at the prospect of no Metal Gear Solid at all on the 3DS. Well, you can now breathe a sigh of relief because Hideo Kojima has cleared a few things up with regards to the demo and where it leaves us with an actual final product.
The construction of the demo was so secretive that even though it was developed by staff at Kojima Studios after work was done on the making of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on the PSP, only the people directly involved knew about it; leading to other members of staff thinking they were on holiday as it was being covertly worked on on a separate floor of the studio.
Series creator Kojima explains that there were actually two versions of the demo that was playable at E3. A "long version" was produced first, but after a request from Nintendo to shorten it in order to allow more people to play through it, a "short version" was made; which eventually became the most-played version even though both were available on the E3 floor.
The point of the demo was to show what was possible on the 3DS. Although it was based on Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on the PS2, Kojima goes on to say:
The high level models are about the same quality as the stuff we made on the PlayStation 3, although it's tough to see this. If we'd had a bit more time, we could have made something better...What we wanted to do this time is show that we're making an entry in the Metal Gear Solid franchise that can be enjoyed in goggle-free 3D on the 3DS.
He also hints that the application of the 3D effect would play an important role in the final version of the game. Noting that gamers may grow tired of objects "popping out" of the screen over long periods of play, he expects there to be a certain emphasis put on objects going "into" the screen. Other considerations include the co-op system seen in Peace Walker.
Although the game will be similar to the PSP's latest instalment in terms of gameplay, Metal Gear Solid on the 3DS will be more of a revisit to a past instalment, Kojima said:
The reason we made it based off MGS3 is because there are many who played MGS for the first time through Peace Walker, so we thought the timing would be just right. Everyone wants to know the story of The Boss...MGS3's story can't change, so we're thinking of Co-ops, 3D and portable-like elements.
At this moment in time, it is still unclear who will direct the 3DS game; even though Kojima was in charge of the demo, his involvement with the final product isn't set in stone. When asked about the release of the game, he admits that getting it ready for the launch of the 3DS may be difficult, but getting it released within the first year of the handheld's launch would be an important target to aim for.

The graphics in the screen shot could be better!
"The high level models are about the same quality as the stuff we made on the PlayStation 3, although it's tough to see this. If we'd had a bit more time, we could have made something better..." epic
"...What we wanted to do this time is show that we're making an entry in the Metal Gear Solid franchise that can be enjoyed in goggle-free 3D on the 3DS." goggle-free 3D, LOL!!!!!!!
Near-PS3 quality models? No wonder they look so nice.
@adgar
Agreed. Monster Hunter FTW!
Has anyone ever locked eyes with Solid Snake besides me? (shuddders) He has the most menacing stare in the history of games.
OK so basically a Metal Gear Solid game IS coming, just not in the same form as the demo, gotcha.
And it will look better?!?!? 3DS is a graphics monster!!
Wait: Did Kojima just say that if they put as much detail into the models for the E3 3DS demo as they did for MGS4? AND that they could've made something better if they were given more time? My god, Kojima's team can work graphical miracles!
@labrat7
You know, that has been on my mind too. I locked eyes with him on that Smash Bros. Dojo and man.. He does have that menacing look. And now that there was a screenshot of his face zoomed up, it's even more.. intimidating.
He reminds me of chuck norris from the future.
hey what happened to my comment?
i will need to do it again:
"Plase put monsters from monster hunter in this one too"
:/ i put the "first" AFTER i posted, just in case that was the problem. editing comments works fine too
@V8 Ninja Indeed they can.
My god....
Another Monster Hunter crossover please? This time put in Lagiacrus from Tri.
They were stealthly working on a stealth game?
In Microsoft's press conference, Kojima confirmed that he is not directly involved with the development of Metal Gear Solid: Rising so I think it would only makes sense that he is involved with this one.
"Everyone wants to know the story of The Boss...MGS3's story can't change, so we're thinking of Co-ops, 3D and portable-like elements."
I like this. Big Boss and The Boss' story will always be more interesting than Raiden so I'm more excited about this game. Still getting Rising though.
Whoa... good stuff, I say.
whoopee. so there'll be a game, great. I'll keep my expectations where I would for any other game with nothing but a cut scene demo to show for it. Just a waiting game for now.
How lame would it be if they called it MGS 3D...
the current screen shots actually seem about the same quality as peace walker
So the 3DS has the power... Now it's up to the developers to make some nice graphics =)....
Hoping for a Super Smash Bros. with AT LEAST Brawl's graphics. =)
@17.: I wouldn't say the same, since you can see a HUGE difference just by staring at Big Boss' face xD... Much more detailed...
^ Hoping for a Super Smash Bros. with level editor, where you could draw levels with stylus.
I guess the "The high level models are about the same quality as the stuff we made on the PlayStation 3, although it's tough to see this. If we'd had a bit more time, we could have made something better." -will finally make some console warriors, that made "knowledgeable" graphics comparisons, while being in defence mode, blush and chage their avatars.
Hasn't he beat the Metal Gear horse to death by now? I swear I saw Metal Gear All Purpose Glue advertised the other day.
I want More MGS for a Nintendo Platform sooooooo bad i have a PS2 but, I feel better playing it on 3DS, DS, Wii u name it I want to play Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater, Rising, Peace Walker, and Portable Ops for the 3DS.
Can you imagine Snatcher or Policenauts on 3DS?
